What is online course development for universities?

Course virtualization is the process of transforming an in-person course or program into an online learning experience with its own objectives, resources, activities and assessments. It is not about uploading slides to the virtual classroom.

At Instruccionarte we work with universities, higher education institutes, graduate schools and continuing education centers. We serve academic vice-rectorates, distance education offices, program coordinators and educational innovation units.

The service adapts to fully online, blended, or in-person courses with digital support. Moving courses online the right way lets you expand your academic offering, reach students who work or live outside the city and make better use of your platform investment. You can learn more about our method on our course virtualization page.

Problems we solve in higher education

We help solve the problems that arise when an institution moves courses online without a shared method. These are the most common:

  • Inconsistent courses: each instructor builds their course their own way, and the student experience changes from one course to the next.
  • File repositories: the virtual classroom only stores PDFs and presentations, with no learning path.
  • Faculty workload: professors master their subject but lack the time and tools to produce digital resources.
  • Launch deadlines: a diploma program must go to market on a fixed date and internal production can't keep up.
  • Evidence for quality assurance: there's no documentation showing how each course was designed.
  • Low participation: students rarely log in because they don't find activities that guide them week by week.

A shared virtualization method organizes the student experience, frees up faculty time and documents the design of each course. It also makes it easier for different instructors to teach the same course without losing consistency.

What we bring online for your institution

We bring anything from a single course to a full program online, with the same pedagogical rigor.

Undergraduate courses

Online or blended courses organized by units and weeks, aligned with the syllabus and the program's learning outcomes.

Continuing education and diploma programs

Programs for professionals who need practical, flexible learning. We design modules, assessments and internal certification for extension courses, diploma programs and specializations. Learn more about what continuing education is.

Resources for faculty

Course templates, tutoring guides, rubrics, question banks and faculty training workshops on online tools and methodologies.

Orientation and student services courses

Welcome courses for incoming students, use of the virtual campus, library, academic integrity and student well-being.

Moodle, formats and quality standards

We build courses directly in Moodle or as standard packages for any platform. Moodle is the most widely used open-source LMS among educational institutions in the region.

  • Course building in Moodle with books, lessons, quizzes, forums, assignments and rubrics.
  • Interactive resources in SCORM or H5P that integrate with the gradebook.
  • Videos and audiovisual resources: edited recorded lectures, animations and infographics.
  • Assessments with feedback, randomized question banks and collaborative activities.

On quality, we ensure alignment between learning outcomes, activities and assessments. We deliver a design matrix for each course that supports your internal quality assurance processes. We recommend reviewing the current requirements of the regulatory body and of the accreditation model your institution follows.

We also look after the student experience: predictable navigation, clear instructions for each activity, a balanced weekly workload and resources accessible from mobile phones.

How we work with your faculty

We work with the instructor as the subject matter expert and with our team responsible for design and production. The process has 6 steps:

  1. Analysis and objectives: we review the syllabus, the student profile and the educational model.
  2. Development of learning materials: the instructor provides the content and we structure it into units.
  3. Pedagogical review and adaptation: we design activities and assessments consistent with the expected outcomes.
  4. Design and audiovisual production: we create resources with your institution's visual identity.
  5. Final content digitization: we build the course and test it from the student's perspective.
  6. Implementation and measurement: we support the first run of the course and gather improvements.

To bring many courses online at once, we first define an institutional template and then produce in batches.

We respect the instructor's time: we ask for specific inputs, short meetings and reviews by unit. The instructor validates academic accuracy, and we handle the instructional, graphic and technical side. A project coordinator tracks progress and reports status to the academic leadership.

Use cases in universities and institutes

These generic examples show how the service applies in different contexts:

  • An institute brings its first-semester general education courses online with a shared template for all its programs.
  • A graduate school launches a six-module diploma program with videos, case studies and assessments in Moodle.
  • A faculty produces a bank of interactive resources for a high-enrollment blended course.
  • A continuing education center turns a weekend course into a self-paced version available all year round.

In every case, the instructor retains academic authorship and the institution receives a course that can be reused over several terms, with editable files for updates.

What determines the cost of moving courses online

The cost depends on the number of courses and the depth of production for each one. The main factors are:

  • Number of courses, units and weeks.
  • State of the content: syllabus and materials ready, or to be developed with the instructor.
  • Amount of video, animation and interactive content per unit.
  • Building in Moodle or delivery as SCORM packages.
  • Faculty training and support while the course is taught.
  • Accessibility requirements, subtitling or versions in another language.

For multi-course projects, an institutional template reduces production effort per course and makes future updates easier.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Universities and institutes, answered

What's the difference between virtualizing a course and uploading it to the virtual classroom?

Uploading a course means publishing existing files. Virtualizing it means redesigning it for online learning, with objectives, resources, activities, interaction and assessments built for students learning at a distance.

Do you work with our institution's Moodle?

Yes. We can build the courses directly in your Moodle with the permissions you grant us, or deliver packages and backups for your team to restore.

Who is the author of the academic content?

The instructor or the institution retains academic authorship. Our team handles the instructional design, multimedia production and course build.

Can you bring many courses online at once?

Yes. We first define an institutional template and guide, then produce in batches with a schedule for each course. This keeps a shared standard across all courses.

Do you develop continuing education diploma programs?

Yes. We design diploma programs, extension courses and specializations with modules, assessments and certification criteria, ready to be delivered online or in a blended format.

How do you support accreditation and licensing?

We deliver design documentation for each course, such as alignment matrices and teaching guides. We recommend comparing it against the current requirements of the regulatory body and of the accreditation model your institution follows.

Do you train faculty to teach online?

Yes. We offer workshops on online tutoring, activity design, using Moodle and producing simple resources, adapted to your faculty's digital skill level.

What multimedia resources does an online course include?

It depends on the agreed scope. It may include introduction videos, edited lectures, animations, infographics, H5P or SCORM interactives, guided readings and quizzes with feedback.

How long does it take to bring a course online?

It depends on the length of the course, the state of the content and the instructor's availability for reviews. In the proposal we set an estimated schedule per course or per batch.

Can you update existing online courses?

Yes. We review the current course, identify improvements and redesign only what's needed: structure, resources, activities or assessments.

Do you work with institutes outside Lima?

Yes. We serve institutions throughout Peru and Latin America remotely, with online meetings and reviews.
